FORESTER
Responsibilities
This position is responsible for assisting with all land management and timber harvest related functions within an assigned area of the northeast Washington region; area size is approximately 45,000 acres in size. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Prepare and implement annual silviculture and production plans by operation and assists with development of the annual harvest plan.
- Prepare annual budgets for assigned area and silvilculture investment analysis.
- Administer contract loggers for contract compliance, which includes all Sustainable Forestry Initiatives® (SFI).
- Remain current with information technology, herbicide, fertilization applications, rates and products.
- Assist in the administration of region tree planting, site prep, PCT, and herbicide applications.
- Evaluate plantation success in assigned area.
- Assist in managing geographic information systems (GIS) for assigned area which includes using ARC INFO and GPS data recorders; apply the integration of research models to field application.
- Manage asset protection, property line and comer verifications.
- Responsible for safe work practices and attitude. Maintain first aid and CPR certificates by participating in Company-sponsored training.
- Make decisions of a routine nature on a frequent basis; responsible for knowing when to refer issues with significant operational, legal or political consequences to the Region Manager.
- Participate and contribute as a team member within a team environment.
Qualifications
A. Education and Experience – Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry or related field or a minimum of 5 years equivalent experience in a related field.
B. Knowledge/Competencies – Technically proficient in all areas of resource management. Must effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Highly adaptive and flexible in dealing with issues with little or no control of conditions. Must have the ability to recognize and address urgent issues and respond with effective solutions in a timely manner. Thorough understanding of all applicable operating policies and procedures. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite programs, ArcMap, GPS and GIS mapping applications and basic financial analysis.
C. Communication – Excellent communication and inter-personal skills required. Frequent interaction with both internal and external contacts. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with peers, internal and external customers, suppliers, contractors, conservation groups, lease holders and the general public.
D. Work Environment – 20% office and 80% field operations. Considerable walking during contract administration, quality compliance checking, inventory data and stand prescription data collections, surface issues, prescribe burning and other field tasks.
E. Physical Requirements – Must be able to work outdoors in strenuous, physical demands in all weather conditions on a regular basis. May need to walk long distances through densely wooded areas, sometimes on steep, wet or uneven terrain, to accomplish work tasks. Slippery or muddy ground, hidden roots or vines, present a constant danger. Good motor co-ordination and manual dexterity for adjusting instruments and activities such as tree planting.
F. Vehicle Requirements – Must have use of own pickup truck in good mechanical and safe condition. Vehicle should not be more than 5 years old (some exceptions made). Must have a current driver’s license and clean MVR. Participation in vehicle allowance plan is provided.
Reporting
Position reports to the Region Manager, and will work closely with all staff in the Colville office and others throughout the firm.
Location
Colville, Washington. The position may involve some overnight travel within the United States.
